What are some things you wish you knew about sexual health but never got taught?

For me it was how important it was to pee every time after sex (I wish a UTI didn’t teach me that lesson)

Is peeing after sex is more important for girls than guys, right? @CloakOfAsh posted a short vid on it on another thread.

I wasn’t taught this at school but was told through a friend that you should never have vaginal intercourse directly after anal.
Big no no. Cos the bacteria can spread and cause infections.
So that’s another strike against learning via porn!

This may sound obvious, but I wish I’d known that even when you’re mentally ready to have sex, something it takes some time for your body to be ready! Getting turned on through foreplay (or using lube) made the difference between painful sex and very enjoyable sex when I was first starting out.

I wish I had learnt…..
How to read what my body really wanted, when it wanted and how it wanted.
Being more in touch with these things has made me more empowered. It has also given me the ability to find my voice and speak up when I’m not comfortable or really giving 100% consent.

Along with the peeing after sex, I wish someone had told me that sex can be messy, noisy, clumsy and not like the movies lol

I would say ‘squirting’/female ejaculation/fluid. It would have been nice to have covered and normalised that sex can end up quite messy at times!

I wish I knew that vag discharge changes throughout your cycle- would have spared a little of those ‘am I normal??’ anxieties that puberty was full of. I wish I knew how neat lube is too! TV would have you think its some slapstick punchline but it’s bloody awesome and sometimes very necessary.

I wish I knew it was ok to ask for what I want, that assertiveness and confidence is completely ok, and it’s not up to someone else to decide what makes sex good or—heaven forbid—end.
