    This article discusses the recent rise of labiaplasties in Australia. Very upsetting. I used to feel self conscious about my labia – I felt it was misshapen and too large. I’m very thankful to have not have considered, yet alone gone down the surgical route as my opinion has definitely changed.

    What at are your thoughts on this? What do you think would help address the issue?

    Wow. I didn’t even know. But here’s the thing – what is considered normal and apart from seeing porn how does one know that their labia isn’t “normal”? Honestly, thinking about it I consider it similar to any other body part – everyone has something different.

    I agree with @NickiPower, what is a ‘normal’ labia? And how does one learn what is normal other than the images we see in porn. It is interesting there is an exhibition in the MONA art gallery in Tasmania that features a great exhibit highlighting the difference in vaginas and labia’s and the normality of it. I think its definitely worth checking out. https://mona.net.au/museum/general-collection
    Maybe more things like this could help address the issue

    Wow @mak_trouble891 – never knew that there was art like that! Definitely eye opening!

    And even the fact that porn or explicit imagery is photoshopped in the first place because otherwise it’s considered offensive. Let labias just be labias!

    Maybe the Labia Library should be requisite sex ed – what do you think?

    I read somewhere that ‘normal’ labias range dramatically in shapes and sizes! What we see in porn is just a very small subset of the norm, and even then we may not know how many pornstars themselves have surgically altered their labias. In that sense, we wouldn’t have a good idea of whether we’re normal or not.

    I’ve actually come across this artist who has created “The Great Wall of Vagina”: http://www.greatwallofvagina.co.uk/about

    From the website:

    “Today it seems that creating images of the vagina is the sole preserve of pornographers, erotic artists and feminists. Step in British artist Jamie McCartney who has grasped the nettle to create a monumental wall sculpture all about this most intimate of places. For 400 women their privates have gone public…

    Half a decade since its humble beginnings, The Great Wall of Vagina has enticed women from many different countries and all walks of life to volunteer to be cast by McCartney in an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the project.

    The 9 metre long polyptych consists of four hundred plaster casts of vulvas, all of them unique, arranged into ten large panels.”

    My favourite line on the website: “It’s not vulgar, it’s vulva!” 😉

    Great topic! @Kit mentioned the Labia Library which is a brilliant resource, complete with vulva photo gallery, info & advice.

    @veryelle that’s a great line! 🙂

    Agree that sex ed should include the labia library and also cliteracy while we are at it

    This makes me sad!! I can understand plastic surgery if you have endured burns or maybe you need a boob reduction from constant back pain or MAYBE you really feel passionate about a certain part of YOU that if you changed it, YOU would truly feel better about YOU. However, if we started changing the shape of our Hoo Hah, are we really doing it for us or for someone else’s gain? Each to their own but I say love YOU for YOU and don’t waste money on changing something that most sexual partners probably wouldn’t even notice!
